Rent in style
Clients often ask me “How do I personalise my house when renting?” Adding some personality and style to a home isn’t a luxury for home owners alone. People who rent can also achieve amazing interiors and a space they reflects their personality, just by following these simple tips below.
1. GET PERMISSION
Always speak to your land lord before you start making any changes to your rental property. Often, if the change will add value to the property your landlord will be happy for you to go ahead with it! (For example a fresh coat of paint, or new window dressings).
2. ADD COLOUR
Adding a splash of colour to your rental is still possible! Think bright colourful cushions, flowers and art work! Even if you’re limited as to what artwork you can hang, you can always opt for a canvas print, and use removable hooks to hang it – to prevent any damage to the walls. ‘Command’ strips work wonders, and can support a beautiful canvas print easily (just refer to weight restrictions on the pack). Adding colour to a space is like a breath of fresh air! It can really transform a room, and create a bright and happy energy.
3. ADD WARMTH
Adding a large floor rug is an easy option to change the feel and look of any room. In the winter months, opt for a thick, textural rug that you can snuggle up on, on cold winter nights. Something in a neutral shade, similar to your floor colour is always a good option, or alternatively a bright bold print is another way to add some more colour in to your space! Another way to add some warmth, is to layer textures together using throw rugs and textural cushions. Think thick, heavy fabrics and beautiful woven knits.
4. WINDOW COVERINGS
Investing in some good quality window coverings is also a great way to change the look of your space, and will also assist in keeping the warmth in during the cooler months. Once again, speak to your landlord first, but a simple change to your window coverings can make a big impact on the overall look of the space. If privacy is an issue, you could also consider purchasing some frosted vinyl film, that can be applied to the glass to obscure the view. This will still let the light flood in, but also provide you with some privacy if the curtains are open.
5. LIGHTING
Lighting can really set the mood, and add warmth to any space. Floor lamps and table lamps are great options for adding light and interest, and are one of the easiest things to add to your space while renting. the soft glow of a flickering candle is also a great idea, and can help you feel relaxed, and help you unwind at the end of the day. There’s nothing better than a beautiful candle burning, that creates a gorgeous scent through the entire house. A favourite of mine is the Yankee candle in Fireside Treats, just perfect for Winter!
